Many people around the North East will be aware of Bruce Grant.
He hangs around on street corners extorting money in the nicest possible way for extremely deserving causes.
At 93 years old he struggles to use public transport with all his fund raising paraphernalia, so to enable him to carry on raising money he has written a book, about his life, the proceeds of which will go to his charities.
Bruce, who was awarded the British Empire Medal in last year’s Queen’s Birthday Awards has had a fascinating life which is documented in the book and is well worth a read.
From growing up in Glenlivet in the Scottish Highlands to a life as an engineer, much of it at sea, to ‘acquiring’ an aeroplane by paying for it with monopoly money, and flying it to France (which didn’t end well) to his days as a charity fund raiser, it’s all touched on in the book.
Bruce is currently in hospital undergoing tests, he said to me on the phone the other day ‘That’s me finished’, personally I doubt it, I hope Bruce will be back on a street corner near you soon with his buckets.
But if he isn’t, then stick your hand in your pocket and buy a copy of his book and support his charities.
